Clearing pigmentation in the skin can be challenging and often requires a multi-step approach using skin treatments, products and different modalities. A key technology in helping to clear pigmentation is red light therapy. Originally used by NASA to help with wound healing and plant growth in space, red light has seen an increase in popularity in recent months in both skin care and wellness.

How Red Light Works

LED therapy as a whole is a non-invasive treatment using different wavelengths of light to stimulate various cellular reactions within the skin. Red light strengthens the skin cells mitochondria giving the cell more energy. Working specifically at 630-700nm, it penetrates deep into the skin to:

1.    Stimulate collagen production

2.    Increase blood flow

3.    Reduce inflammation

Effects on Pigmentation

Red light therapy is an effective method to treat hyperpigmentation for many reasons. To start, due to resulting increase in blood flow, your skin cells receive an increase in oxygen allowing them to function better, boosting cell turnover. Further, an overproduction of melanin can be triggered from inflammation in the skin, thus by reducing the amount of inflammation in the skin can result in a reduction of pigmentation.

Routine Building

Incorporating red light therapy is simply and easy. You only need red light exposure three times per week, twenty minutes at a time. With no downtime, red light therapy can be used at any point throughout the day. Just remember to wear protective eyewear!

Overall, red light therapy can be an excellent addition to your hyperpigmentation clearing routine!
