Getting to Know Ceramides - and the Benefits to Skin

Updated: Jan 6

During the Sephora sale a few months back, while browsing to shop, I saw my favourite toner for dry skin - Laniege Cream Skin Toner. This product is pack full of cermaides (and now peptides). Ceramides is honestly such a great ingredient to look out for if you happen you have or are experiencing dry skin. Lets break down why ceramides are dry skin saviours and even give some product recs!

Let's break down why:

Well for starters, ceramides are these long chained lipids that are naturally found in the skin – the stratum corneum (top layer of skin) to be exact. It makes up the cement that hold the skin cells together and keeps moisture locked inside. Though, there are roughly 9 forms of ceramides, all with different names, they all essentially do the same thing (more or less).

As we age though, our natural ceramides deplete resulting in impaired skin barrier function. This can lead to dryness due to TEWL ( trans epidermal water loss) as a result of the skin cells no longer being held together properly. This can also result in flakiness and even visible signs of aging like fine lines and wrinkles. We can even expect to experience increase in skin sensitive and increased risk of irritation.

This is why including ceramides in our routine is so important especially as we get older. By including a ceramide product into our skincare routine, it replenishes the ceramides lost with aging and improves barrier function. With improved barrier function comes increased skin hydration and reduced signs of aging. Ceramides also help reduce inflammation and protects against visible damage from environmental stressors.

Seeing as this ingredient has all these benefits, ceramides are definitley for everyone, but people with drier skin would benefit the most from adding ceramides into their routines as it would help hydrate their skin as well as get rid of any flakiness they experience.

Overall products with ceramides are definitely something I would recommend to everyone to add to their skincare routine! Products like Laneige Cream Skin Toner, CeraVe Facial Moisturizing Lotion and Byoma Hydrating Serum are a great place to start when incorporating ceramides into your routine!
