First Semester…Let’s Talk About it!

Updated: Oct 13, 2024

I am literally days away from the start of my second semester in the medical esthetics program and honestly my brain cannot even wrap my head around it. First semester flew by so fast and created such a mix amount of emotions for me.

Honestly, the very first thing I felt was excitement. I was so excited to start this new chapter of my life. It took me forever (an entire year) to decide on whether or not I was going to start the program, so to finally be there in that space was exciting. I pretty much kept this excitement throughout the semester, but it started to change a little as the weeks went on. In stated of being excited to be there, I became excited to learn what’s next. I just couldn’t wait to absorb as much info as I could. I’m the type of student to count down the days until reading week but this time I was enjoying school so much that when reading week came around, it took me by surprise.  Outside of the excitement, there were also times where I would get restless. As much as I was enjoying what I was doing and learning, school is still school. The stress of assignments, quizzes and tests would get to me, especially by the end of the semester. By the very end, I couldn’t wait for the semester to be over lol so I wouldn’t have to do anymore schoolwork lol.

In terms of classes, I personally found all my classes to be super straight forward. If you showed up to class, then the chances of you doing well were pretty high. This semester I had Hand Anatomy, Foot Anatomy, Spa Customer Service and Skincare I. In hand and foot anatomy, the teachers showed me how to do a super basic manicure and pedicure as well as taught me about the science-based stuff like how many bones are in the hand and foot and the circulatory systems of these body parts. I have to say, though I have no intentions of become a nail tech, I really enjoyed theses classes and actually looked forward to going to them every class day.  It felt more like hanging with your girlfriends than actual class. The content wasn’t hard and was super easy to keep up with.

Skincare I taught me all the basic steps of a facial as well as some of the basic knowledge of the skin like it’s different layers and what they do. I felt like out of all my classes, this was definitely the most content heavy class and required me to really do some heavy studying to make sure I truly remembered and understood everything. Spa customer service is honestly not a class I want to get into. My mom always said, if you don’t have anything nice to say, then don’t say anything. The one thing I will say though is that if you have ever worked a customer service or customer-oriented job before then you should be good for this class. A lot of the things we learned we stuff you’d pretty much already know after work jobs lie those.

One thing I didn’t like about the semester was the fact that my classes, especially the in-person ones started super earlyyy. I was waking up at 6 AM to leave my house by 7AM just to make sure I was on time for my 9AM classes. I mean, I do live kinda far, so that definitely doesn’t help. But overall, I wish I could have slept in more ya know.

Anyways, second semester starts next week, and the excitement is back. This semester I’m learning more facial steps and skin knowledge, waxing, product knowledge and even getting to work on clients in our on-school spa.  I can’t wait to learn all the new and exciting things this semester and become closer and closer to becoming a certified esthetician!
